FLAVOUR ORIGINS
The fruit of the Passiflora vine is a type of passionflower, the passion fruit is a type of berry with a tough outer rind and juicy, seed-filled centre. Native to the Americas, they are believed to have been cultivated by the Aztecs, and the fruit was introduced to Europe in 1629 by Spanish missionaries.
Passion Fruit is round or oval-shaped and can be either yellow, red, purple or green in colour. The pulp and seeds are highly nutritious and often enjoyed raw but are frequently used to flavour other foods and drinks such as candies, ice cream, syrup, jellies and alcoholic beverages.
