FLAVOUR ORIGINS
Native to tropical regions stretching from central Africa to Southeast Asia, Basil is a culinary herb and member of the mint family. The name derives from a Greek word meaning “royal plant” and was believed to have been used in the production of royal perfumes.
There are many varieties of basil, although in western cuisine the generic term “basil” refers to the variety also known as sweet basil or Genovese Basil. It is commonly used to make Pesto, a fragrant sauce that originates from Genoa and the Ligurian region of Italy.
