While sugar cane is originally from New Guinea, the commercial sugar cane we know today comes from a hybrid of wild sugar cane plants from both India and China. Over time, innovations in the refinement process have led to the pure white sugar granules that we recognise today.

One such way is by using sugar cane stalks to skewer meats and seafood. Heat coaxes the sugarcane juice from the stalks, infusing the meats with a caramel like flavour.
